Ref-<Would it be fair to say that this poses a threat to IBM's Semiconductor Division, as opposed to IBM's "core business", also possibly, R/S 6000-centric business?

From what Paul indicates, IBM's Server Division seems to be onboard with Merced >

Yes the R/S 6000 centric business and the Semiconductor Division would be hurt, and unfortunately for IBM, they divisions contribute most of the IBM's profit. Merced Based servers would be a much less profitable business for IBM, because it is likely to become a commodity business, a la PC business or Xeon based Servers.

IBM can make Merced a more profitable business, by agresively leading the way in integrating Merced better than other vendors.Since that will erode the RS6000 business even more, IBM management will not let that happen.

[For the 386 and its descendents, IBM became a me too company. IBM could have leveraged its expertise by making more powerful and better PCs than anyone else, but since that would have hurt the highly profitable mainframe business, IBM PC's continue to be mediocre and bland.]
