10/08/99 - Chip Sets -- Pentium III
Product Rollout

Oct. 08, 1999 (VARBusiness - CMP via COMTEX) -- This week, Intel Corp.
announced a new chip set, the 820, along with 533-MHz and 600-MHz versions of the
Pentium III. Intel is also expected to announce an 810E chip set. The 810E is similar to
the 810 chip set for Celerons, but it will work with the Pentium III.

The 810E and 820 chip sets are built on the veteran 440BX chip set, but the new chips
are designed to enhance e-business applications through robust manageability and
security, according to Intel. New features include:

- For the 810E and 820: Direct links between the chip set and disk controllers, USB
controllers and PCI add-ons.

- For the 820: Support for the Direct RDRAM system memory as well as the AGP 4x
graphics bus. The 820 also supports affordable multiprocessing by integrating SMP
support directly into the chip set.

The 440BX still has some life left. Most analysts expect the 440BX to be supported by
OEMs for 600-MHz and faster Pentium IIIs through the third quarter of 2000. Slower
Pentium IIIs are expected to start adopting the newer chip set by this coming March.
The 440BX is expected to be supported in notebooks throughout 2000.
