Let's just say that the first several times I heard Gemstar touted on this thread I dismissed it completely. It was only after I read the 6/23/99 Stephens report that I began to put my own experience aside and let myself be convinced by Stew's and Mike's enthusiasm...

Excellent lesson in there for all of us. I'm still hurt that I missed out on Q a hundred points ago because Geoff Moore didn't see a gorilla game there. Lesson learned for me. My cost basis is much higher than most on this list for QCOM because of believing too much in the teacher.

<<Circuit City on the phone and am told, "oh, Guide+ doesn't work in your area. Didn't the salesman mention that?" I swear, I could have thrown the phone across the room...>>

Sounds like classic early market to me and supports my statement that the sales people didn't want to talk about it.

Enjoy

tekboy,

grrrrr... don't get me started. :( Last year the salesman at MY Circuit City (central NJ) went on and on about the Guide+ system, how wonderful it was, why it was a great reason to get the fancy 32" ProScan I was looking at, etc.

The data is carried by ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, UPN and PBS. Surely you must receive one of those broadcasts. If it appears that the local cable franchise does not transmit or degrades the signal then simple rabbit ears will suffice for reception of the guide until the wireless system eliminates these problems in 2000 with its 98% national footprint.

This may also explain the discrepancy in our individual Circuit City experiences because I found 38 models with Gemstar Inside on the floor here locally. There are no signal problems here so it may be a case of selective marketing until the wireless system is out and/or
a cable deal is struck such as with AT&T.

Regards
Stew
