Chris, Amadahl is owned by Fujitsu, I believe. The Fujitsu deal was itended to fill demand outside the US. Looks like the Amdahl deal is separate, though the politics of the "sales call" may have helped.

Good news, imo, as Amdahl is searching for new revenue streams. I am not sure how much marketing/selling clout AMDAHL brings to the table, though. Maybe they can kick Dell into gear with some healthy fear.

hmmmm. I wonder if Amdahl has a mainframe NAS product in mind?

Network Appliance Continues Caching Industry Leadership According to Internet Research Group Study

BusinessWire, Monday, October 11, 1999 at 12:14

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 1999--

New NetCache(TM) Streaming Media Solutions

Position NetApp To Strengthen Market Leadership

Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP), a leading provider of dedicated cache appliances for building the Internet's infrastructure, today announced that it has been ranked the leading caching appliance vendor, based on revenue market share, according to a new report published by the Internet Research Group.

Network Appliance was ranked number one in caching appliance revenue by Internet Research Group, confirming the company had established a market share of 28% of the caching market in 1998. The findings of the report are based on vendor research, customer interviews and bottom up analysis of caching demand.

The 1999 Internet Caching Report, released by Internet Research Group this week, concludes that demand for Internet caching is soaring and will continue to rise rapidly over the next five years. The total size of the caching market for 1999 is projected to be $287 million, rising to nearly $2.2 billion in 2003.

"Our research suggests worldwide caching revenues will experience a 66% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) during the next five years," said Peter Christy, vice president of the Internet Research Group. "Network Appliance's NetCache solution puts the company in an excellent position to capture a major share of this fast growing market. With appliances set to dominate the caching market and Network Appliance's record of delivering caching appliances with the features required by ISPs and enterprises such as streaming media and filtering, the company should see continuing, significant growth in sales."

"Our revenue leadership reflects our worldwide success in evangelizing the caching market," said Amit Pandey, Director of NetCache for Network Appliance. "And it positions us extremely well to pursue emerging markets such as streaming media distribution."

NetCache appliances meet the exploding content demand facing ISPs and enterprise networks by delivering a rapid and cost-effective way to cache popular types of Internet traffic such as streaming media. Network Appliance's recently announced NetCache 4.0 architecture provides a platform to integrate Microsoft(R) Windows(R) Media Technologies and emerging Internet protocols natively into the NetCache appliance delivering reductions in network congestion by over 50 percent.

NetCache Appliances

NetCache appliances provide critical and transparent network infrastructure that enable ISPs and enterprises to improve Internet performance, minimize bandwidth costs and scale network and server infrastructure by intelligently moving Internet content, such as Windows Media and NetNews, closer to end users. NetCache appliances cache the Internet backbone in several countries, including Australia, France, Hong Kong, Israel, Singapore, South Africa and the U.K., as well as cache Internet traffic for leading corporations such as Ford Motor Company, Nokia, SAIC, PSINet, Tripod and theglobe.com.
