I hate to jut in here, since I totally agree with the main point of your post, but ...

IMHO, one shouldn't lump environmentalists in with animal-rights activists, even though the 2 groups have some members in common.

For example, I don't think most "tree-huggers" are against the practice of planting a stand of trees to be later harvested for paper, whereas most PETA-types are against the use of lab rats. I don't think most "tree-huggers" lose sleep over the loss of one tree, just the whole forest, whereas PETA can't seem to distinguish between the death of one animal and the extinction of a species.
