? about adsl.

I'm under impression asynchronous connections do not allow user to upload as fast as download. Is this correct? Seems that the trend would be to allow either up or downloads at equal speed. Growth of home businesses is one reason, that people also want to send fast, not just get. Don't know if I have this right. Saw a tv show promoting company which had connected a housing complex touting synchronous dsl.

Alcatel and Telcordia Forge Alliance to Drive Innovation in Global OSS Market Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 08:19

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In an aggressive move to gain a leadership
position in the high-growth, multi-vendor global 0peration Support Systems
(OSS) market, Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) and Telcordia Technologies, Inc. (formerly
Bellcore) have entered into a strategic alliance to offer complete,
integrated, multi-domain solutions to traditional and emerging carriers
worldwide.
The alliance builds on the complementary strengths of the two companies by
combining the global presence of Alcatel with the OSS expertise of Telcordia
Technologies to drive innovation in a highly competitive global carrier
environment.
Alcatel has a strong global presence and has created significant business
in integrated operational support systems for sophisticated multi-domain,
heterogeneous telecommunications networks. A key element of Alcatel's
strategy is to develop its presence in a market that is showing explosive
growth for service-oriented networks by becoming a leading full service
supplier of OSS and value added service solutions worldwide.
Telcordia Technologies is the world's largest provider of OSS, network
software, consulting and engineering services to the telecommunications
industry. Telcordia is focused on applying advanced technology to create the
robust, "industrial-strength" communications networks of the future.
Telcordia Technologies is CMM Level 5 certified and offers high technology
software solutions to meet a wide range of communications needs.
Welcoming the agreement, Krish Prabhu, COO of Alcatel Telecom, commented:
"We have analysed the dynamics of the OSS market for the next century. The
explosion of services offered by the telcos, the diversity of technologies,
plus the multiplicity of competing operators, will fuel an enormous need for
modern, fully-automated yet extremely flexible operation support systems.
Both companies have reached the conclusion that they need the best partners to
face this challenge and be among the dominant players."
Telcordia President, Sanjiv Ahuja, added: "To compete in the global
marketplace, service and network providers are focused on retaining their
current customers and gaining market share. Based on the growing customer
interest in complete OSS solutions, the Alcatel/Telcordia alliance will play a
significant role in the growing global telecommunications market by providing
solutions that fully support customers' efforts to be successful."
Customers will benefit from a comprehensive and formidable offer
satisfying their complete needs for service assurance, service provisioning
and performance management for all types of networks: voice and data, access
and transmission, traditional switching, new convergent IP and ATM networks.
Telcordia's world-leading technology when combined with Alcatel's
6,000 software professionals in this area, its integration skills and its
worldwide presence puts the alliance in pole position to provide the best
service offering to its customers. The alliance will include a joint strategy
for market development and possible joint product developments.
Operators, both incumbents and new players, will benefit from improved
operational efficiency through enhanced automation and integration of their
back-office carrier activities, thereby reducing costs. This is at a time
when they are under increasing pressure from competitors and regulators to
improve services and modernise their networks, including automating their
provisioning and activation processes to keep pace with customer growth. They
will find that new carrier products and services can be deployed without the
extensive reworking of the OSS resources and databases that is required today.
The result will be greater competitiveness through improved customer care and
the ability to react faster and more flexibly to market demand.

Alcatel Signs USD 120 Million DWDM Contract with New Brazilian Operator

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 10:20

Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

PARIS, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Pegasus Telecom, a new Brazilian data
communication service provider, has just selected Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) as its
technology partner for the optical backbone of their network based on the
latest DWDM and SDH combined technologies. The contract valued at
USD 120 million (EUR 115 million) includes the supply of all equipment for the
four phases of the project and the implementation of a turnkey network for the
first two phases.
The project will use 6,000 km of optical cables with 72 fibers (including
the latest generation of Teralight(TM) fiber, developed by Alcatel for
high-speed DWDM transmission). Laid along interstate highways linking the
cities of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia and Porto
Alegre, this network will enable data, voice and image traffic. The Pegasus
DWDM/SDH infoway, which will offer transmission speeds from 100 to 400 Gbit/s,
will be the first of its kind in the Brazilian telecommunications market.
Jose Barbosa Mello, President of Pegasus Telecom, stated, "Our objective
when selecting Alcatel as technology partner was to find a company that would
add to our project the most modern solutions for our clients. We understand
that the market will demand more and more quality products at low costs with
high transmission capacity. Alcatel is today one of the most advanced
companies in this industry, with a unique capacity to develop products
designed toward the future of global telecommunications, where Internet will
play an increasingly important role."
Jean-Francois Fille, President of Alcatel Brazil, declared, "We are
delighted to have been chosen by Pegasus. Our unique solution for combining
DWDM and SDH on the same platform will result in higher efficiency, real time
network monitoring and overall cost reduction. We are bringing to the
Brazilian market state-of-the-art equipment and software for very high-speed
data transmission and with a capacity ten times bigger than traditional
infoways."
The project will be deployed in four phases. The first phase will include
the new connection between the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which
will later be extended to Belo Horizonte. In 2000, the company plans to
extend the network as far as Brasilia and Porto Alegre, passing by Curitiba,
Florianopolis and other southern Brazilian cities.
With this new success, Alcatel further consolidates its leading position
in optical networking systems for both submarine and terrestrial networks.

Note to Editors:
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology increases the
transmission capacity of the optic fibers. Different wavelengths allow
transporting different signals (voice, data and video) at long distance, each
one working independently. This also allows networking the different traffics
according to the specific needs of the network. The DWDM can be directly
integrated on the operators' existing networks.
