Its been a very underreported story. I don't know why, its a great story. William Casey had Lane Kirkland shuttling back and forth showing Lech Walesa how to set his union up. Casey himself was in constant communication with the Pope or his emissary. The whole thing started in Poland, and once Poland fell it was like dominoes. Without this Polish pope and Walesa's Solidarity movement, the Wall still might be up. Not to downplay America's input. Our help was invaluable. Casey and Kirkland, especially Casey, were indispensable. Thank God Reagan let Casey be Casey. They don't make warhorses like him anymore. Or union leaders like Kirkland either.
