One needn't defend Pinochet, even on balance, and still find it objectionable that a third party took it upon itself to break a deal that meant a peaceful resolution for Chile. It is a bad precedent, when negotiating the removal of dictators, to have it understood that they cannot rely on the international community to support the deal, but will instead be subject to free- lancing judiciaries...Pinochet's legacy is, though, complex and subject to dispute, rather than obviously all bad....
