>>COULD WIND BE ON CSCOS' SHOPPING LIST??? REASON FOR 1 PT MOVE IN STOCK??<< Hello Monaco, I truly hope WINd is NOT on Cisco's, or for that matter, on anyone else's acquisition radar! I firmly believe that in the not too distant a future, WINd has the potential of becoming a "Gorilla." A status that can command an astronomical market valuation. (Share holders of a recent "Gorilla," Qualcomm can happily attest to the sudden wealth that was created, and is still being created, when Mr. Market conferred this most sought after title on their company.) And the ownership of such a primate is the Holy Grail of all investors. As an investor in WINd, I hope one day to see this company's name uttered by investors with the same reverence as the names of other well known gorillas like Microsoft, Cisco, Intel and of course Qualcomm. A buyout of WINd by another Gorilla will negate that potential. Sure WINd share holders would receive a sudden windfall if it was bought out. But they wuld miss out on the real WINdfall if it was left alone to one day become a "Gorilla." A couple of years back I had brought up the possibility of a buyout of WINd by another company on this thread and had asked Allen Benn if WINd's management would or could thwart a takeover bid. The following link is his take on the subject:Message 1563290 When I consider what The Register, a publication whose very existence is based upon being the bearer of bad news, recently had to say about WINd, then I believe that it's chances of becoming a "Gorilla" are quite good: posted 01/09/99 5:00pm by Mike Magee in Palm SpringsIntel acquires another firm as IXA mycelium spreads Intel announced this morning it has brought another networking company, Netboost, as part of its move to become a leader in the networking market. At the same time, Intel will roll out its IXA architecture and proudly announce its network chip, the IXP 1200. These details were leaked out by two US publications at the end of last week, and Chipzilla is furious about this. Netboost specialises in infrastructure including VPNs (virtual private networks) and RMON. And watch out for WindRiver's share price today. As we reported earlier, its real time operating system is getting to be pervasive . It's not only at the heart of System IO, formerly known as Future IO and NGIO, but it's also to be found in the new marchitecture that corporate vice president Mark Christensen is currently outlining. The Intel Internet Exchange Architecture (IXA) offers five levels of components in both Lans and Wans, Christensen told us yesterday. It, and the sexily named IXP 1200 which will cost around $200, will appear in products for small to medium sized businesses up to terabit routers. Customers are giants like Cisco, Nortel and Lucent, and if Intel is successful in selling to these type of customers, IXA will spread across the global network in a similar way to how fungal mycelium gets everywhere. Its IXA architecture will even reach into the carrier clouds, said Miner. Intel will licence the IXA spex to all and sundry, but will keep the intellectual property rights of the component based architecture, he said. Christensen said that the sexily named IXP 1200 will replace the more expensive custom ASICs normally used in network equipment. Intel will put up $200 million in the form of an investment fund for startups who want to jump onto the IXA bandwagon. Each of the "building blocks" which are part of the IXA has different competitors, he said. The control engine of the sexily named IXP 1200 has a StrongARM core, while it includes support for the PCI bus and also has a new IX bus, which allows multiple devices to be used in parallel. The business will be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, he predicted. But we can't help thinking that if IXA takes off, the building blocks will be a bit like fungal mycelium, and will pervade every part of the Internet rapidly, giving Intel unprecedented control of the worldwide network. Mycelium is the underlying infrastructure of what crop up as toadstools and mushrooms. © theregister.co.uk Thanx to James Connolly for pointing out the above article. And then when I saw Jerry Fiddler's recent quote in the San Jose Mercury News, I become even more convinced that Allen Benn's vision of WINd's future, which he has so ably articulated over the past few years on this thread, is beginning to look less misty with the passing of every day and the release of each new press release from WINd River Systems. I believe we will soon see WINd reach gale force strength and then hopefully it will be classified a bonafide "Tornado." A Tornado that I will not for a second mind being in the eye of!A little prediction: WINd's share price will see a new all time high before the end of the year. Regards, Karim P.S., For those not familiar with the "Gorilla" and the "Tornado" concept(s) in investing, I recommend them to check out the "Gorilla and King Portfolio candidates" thread here on SI. P.P.S., Thanx, Greg. :)
