John,

Yes, NVLS had a dynamite quarter. Further Rick Hill expects more than 10% sequential growth for 4th quarter.

Uncharacteristically, he also indicated that at least the first couple quarters of 2000 are also looking quite strong. At the end of NVLS third quarter they had almost 5 months backlog, falling a little short of $250M but well over the $200M mark.

Majority of the business came from capacity buys and was spread across the various markets and geographies. [i.e. This upleg is for real.] :-)

One of the main growth drivers was in the 0.18µ product area.

Not only was 1Q00 looking good, but the Cu business is building out into 2Q00. Rick is expecting to see another 6 companies committing to Cu Capacity buys. <vbg for us MTSN holders>

Taiwan: Getting more orders from the Taiwanese chipmakers so that they can process their backlogs. [i.e. - a previously unexpected bonus from the earthquake.]

1 Customer has reported Cu yields almost as good as Al.

Y2K: NVLS has zero concern about this issue. Same status for NVLS's customers. [i.e. - Y2K is likely to turn out to be primarily overhyped.]

In summary, this is the most positive earnings conference call and outlook I've heard in more than 3 years. I'd expect a very positive reaction by the sector for the remainder of the week barring some exogenous event.

Big smiles all around,
Ian.
