It is certainly not the tradition. FDR's sons were all in the service, and James was Exec Officer of the first Raider attack on Makin Island (our first Pacific land offensive).
It was said that the red tag ("PI") on the Marine personnel jackets (anyone who had ever been inquired about by a politician). The enlisted clerks did their best to make their lives living hell.

You might find enlistment and casualty stats from WWI interesting. The sons of the high and mighty in Britain, fell in greater relative numbers than any other group. Then, again, they knew they weren't getting the keys to the manor.

This is true I think. One of the reasons I don't understand the brouhaha over, nor begrudge, Bush's service in the Reserves. JLA
