goldsnow,

About the only thing that has less support than a Russian
tank rolling across Chechnya is the Chechnyans themselves.
If you can believe it, the Chechnyans can't understand why
the world is not helping them. Could it be that they
executed six International Red Cross workers a few weeks
back? Or is it that they keep setting off car bombs in
Moscow? Or is it that they tried to drag Dhagistan into
the conflict?

Goldsnow, I wish I could agree with you that there's little support for the conflict in Moscow.

Last time around, there was little public support. This time around the general public has been even more bloodthirsty than the generals.Of course, a lot of this bloodthirstiness has deliberately been stimulated by the authorities. Hardly anyone questions the official version of the apartment block bombings -- that "Chechen terrorists" are responsible for them. That is, hardly anyone is demanding proof (which might not be forthcoming, anyway).

No -- people need, and want, a scapegoat. It isn't just the terrorists -- it's all of them! All Chechens! All Caucasians for that matter! Filthy blacks, they want to kill us all! They are the cause of all our woes! etc., etc., etc. So, stomp them all out like so many cockroaches! That'll teach them to mess with Russians! Eat shit or die! etc., etc. etc. Just take a stroll through Russian bulletin boards & newsgroups, and you will see what I mean.
