Ok Techriders, here's part of an email I sent to a group of my hunting buddies, the relevant part about Lava is here:

I'm back from opening weekend at Lower Klamath...
...Sunday we decided to hunt the same area, but more towards
Unit 8. We went out with just the 747's, 8 dozen Johnson's,
and the magnets. This was Lava's (my pup) first hunt.
Before shooting time (while we were setting up), I let Lava off of her
leash, and she was running those big circles full-speed that lab
pups do. Constant energy! But once the dekes were out, I staked
her on a leash near the blind, so she settled down. I was a little
unsure how the gunfire would affect her, as she has only been
exposed at the gun club where we train, and never had a shotgun
fired directly next to her. Anyway, we had a duck come in
early, and I let my dad take it. He fired and knocked the duck
down. I looked over at the dog to see how she reacted, and
she was lying down SNORING!! I called her name, and she
looked up with a look on her face that said something like "Why
are you bothering me.". So I get her off the leash, and send
her to where the duck fell. She trots a few feet away, and looks
at me again. I then get out of the blind and walk within 20 feet
of the duck. Picked up a rock and threw it there, and then
sent the dog to that spot. She ran to the duck...sniffed it for
a few seconds (this was her first full duck...not just wing on a
bumper) and picked it up and returned it to me. I loved it!
So then we get back in the blind, and the ducks/geese quit
flying. Later that morning, a lone teal flys by and I nail it.
At about 11 am, we are getting ready to pick-up again, and
all of a sudden 4 specks come out of nowhere into the dekes.
We knock down 2 of them, and the dog sees them fall, and
is pretty excited. I let her off of her leash, and she runs
to the first goose and returns it, and then the second. I was
very proud. I think shes catching on, and by the end of the
season will be doing great.
