It seemed to me at least as balanced as what is presented by the average evangelist. No way to get around it, it's a pretty bloody book.

I remember asking a priest, during confirmation classes, why an omnipotent God had to have his son crucified to redeem humanity. If he willed them redeemed, would it not be so? I mean, who damned them (a bit arbitrarily, I must say) in the first place?

The answer was something like "shut up and believe, who are you to question God".

I recall thinking "I'm not questioning God, I'm questioning you". I actually didn't believe in God by that time, though I hadn't yet developed the strength to admit it to myself.
