Feared Chechen guerrilla chief Shamil Basayev threatened Monday to launch a terrorist campaign against Russia in reprisal for Moscow's offensive in the breakaway republic.

"The Russian leadership will soon have the chance to demonstrate how it combats terrorism against Russian citizens," he told AFP in a telephone interview.

joan,

Just remember that the 1990s has been the era of "loopy
logic" ie "I did not inhale", "We will bomb the Serbs
until they understand peace", "I did not have sex with
that woman", "That all depends upon what the meaning of
the word (is), is..."...etc.

As for the Ruskies, last week the Chechnyans brought a
busload of reporters (I read the Time magazine story)
into the battlezone to show the world what was going on.
The funny thing was that the Chechnyans had to keep the
reporters under armed guard the entire time for fear that
one of the local Muslim Warlords might kidnap them and
hold them for ransom. Chechnya is for lack of a better
word, a sh*t-hole.

As for the car bombings, yes the Chechnyans denied that
they were behind them. Of course later they said that
the car bombings would continue unless the Russians halted
their advance into Chechnya. Figure into that what you
may. Personally, if I was Boris Yeltsin I would hammer
those suckers untill they bleed. I would drop an 80 mega-
ton thermonuclear bomb right on Grozny...then lay down a
carpet of chemical weapons and gasses on the dug in suckers
in the mountains. Finish the job by dumping anthrax into
their back 40, and call it a day. The Romans and Sciprio
knew what it would take to end the trouble from Carthage,
and they did the job.
