Look, Joe Sobran has a lot of things going for him, but he tends to an obnoxious and discredited racialism, and has a strain of anti- semitism that is divisive and without redeeming social value. He willfully persisted in defying Buckley's requests to tone it down, and got canned. That is not "censorship" or purging, that is capitalism. It is Buckley's magazine....Anyway, you are attributing the wrong root cause for the tendencies, if they exist. These guys spent a lot of time battling Communists, purging them from unions and liberal organizations, like the ADA, because of the Communists propensity to try to take over control, and the probability that the revelation of a significant Communist presence would be used to discredit the organizations. They set out to prove their democratic bona fides by repudiating extremism. In fact, long before the advent of neoconservatism, Buckley did the same when he condemned the John Birch Society, and repudiated the Objectivists. One has to distinguish oneself from extremists....
