Does this sound as unrealistic to you as it does to me?

I think "faith" is essential to a good life.

Some find it so. Others do not. Neither group should assume that their experience is common to the other.

If religion gets in my face I can sigh and shrug and write it off as one more irritation. But when Government encourages religion to get in my face, or assists it in getting there, I will feel intruded upon, and I will complain.

I really don't think we have much to quarrel over here.

I like "whatever gets you through the night". I earnestly believe that each of us has to develop ways to meet their own needs. Most people seem satisfied with the idols of their own tribe. Others have to go on vision quest. Some find what meets their needs and constitutes their private truth. Others seek unsatisfied forever.
Those who seek to share their truth are tolerable. Sometimes they help others find a truth for them. Those who seek to impose their truth on others are contemptible.
I have known (and "tolerated") murderers, thieves, rapists, prostitutes, and many other conventionally evil people. Most of them had worked out a way to live with themselves. I cannot recall a single one who was obsessed with a sense of sin. Most of the seemingly sinful people I have known suffer from a disease -- like clinical depression. Their value systems mismatch their behavior. They need Prozac rather than preaching at IMO.
I don't think most Christians are evil people. I don't think most of them do bad thngs. I certainly don't hate them, because most of them IMO want to do good. It's a systematic problem. It's a religion based IMO on a fundamental mistake. "Sin" is a purely human value unknown to nature. No child IMO is born "sinful." He is taught sin by people. He loves naturally, a basic human trait. With reinforcement of friendship and love people can become peaceful and loving. I've known many families of atheists -- including two of my own -- where love and generosity were everywhere. I am sure there are many Christian families full of love -- I've known a few of them. But remember, Jesus told his followers to leave their families and to take no thought of the morrow. He rejected his mother and brothers. These are things I interpret as really despicable. I don't see how Christians can teach good when saddled by the Bible. JIMO
