(LTWV) Clarent and LiteWave Selected to Provide IP Telephony to Russia's Largest Phone Company; Companies Selected for Four City Deployment for Rostelecom

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Oct 11, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Clarent(R) Corporation (Nasdaq: CLRN), a worldwide leader in carrier-grade, phone-to-phone IP telephony solutions, and LiteWave Corp. (OTCBB: LTWV), a telecom network solutions company utilizing Voice over Internet
Protocol (VoIP) technology delivery via fiber optic, Internet circuit and satellite systems, announced today that they have been selected to install IP telephony in Russia for Rostelecom, Russia's primary incumbent long distance phone carrier.

The initial deployment will offer Clarent-based IP telephony long distance calling services to people in Moscow, St. Petersberg, Yazoslavl and Volgogzad.

Currently, there are approximately 25 million telephones for an estimated 140 million people in Russia. There is strong and increasing demand for more telecommunications infrastructure and for long distance calling alternatives within Russia. Crosna, a Russian satellite communications company, has been working in a joint venture with
Rostelecom to increase these long distance calling services and bandwidth.

The Crosna/Rostelecom joint venture currently offers such services through an extensive terrestrial and satellite-based footprint and is looking to add IP telephony into this network. The new services are intended to increase long distance calling alternatives and to decrease
long distance calling costs for the people in Russia.

Crosna and LiteWave have formed a new joint venture to offer these IP telephony services to Rostelecom. The new joint venture, owned 50 percent by each company, is called LiteWave East. Clarent Corporation has been selected to provide IP telephony products to LiteWave East.

Within LiteWave East, LiteWave will manage the Clarent-based IP telephony technology for Crosna/Rostelecom. Crosna will provide access to Rostelecom's customers, a satellite network, and also the required telecommunications licenses.

The Clarent-based IP telephony services are targeted to roll out in phases. The first phase is planned to be the initial four city, land-based deployment. In the next phase, Clarent intends to offer Clarent-based services through the Crosna/Rostelecom satellite-based network to additional locations in Russia.

"Clarent is delighted to be selected to offer IP telephony products that will be deployed for Rostelecom," said Jerry Chang, CEO and president, Clarent Corporation. "IP telephony will increase long distance calling alternatives in Russia and will also form the foundation for a variety of new IP-based phone calling services that can be offered to the people in Russia."

"LiteWave's personnel have extensive experience providing international VoIP telecommunications services, and are pleased to be installing a seamless VoIP network through its joint venture with Crosna," said Ian Lambert, director, LiteWave Corporation. "We look forward to helping Rostelecom deploy a state-of-the-art IP telephony network in Russia."

The first set of IP telephony long distance calling services for Rostelecom's customers is expected to be available in the fourth quarter 1999.
