Novell To Undergo Slight Resturcturing (10/11/99, 5:13 p.m. ET) By Edward F. Moltzen, Computer Reseller News Novell will undergo a slight restructuring during thenext month, when the company is expected to tap twotop executives for marketing and research positions. Eric Schmidt, Novell's CEO, said during a keynote at the Gartner Group Symposium/ITxpo that he will name executives to replace former research chief Christopher Stone and marketing executive John Slits within the next month. Schmidt pointed out Stone's contributions to Novell technology and said Slits "structured the marketing, got the message out." But, he added, "they also recruited very strong teams" and suggested there would be promotions from within the Novell organization to replace those executives. "You should see, over the next month, replacements named and various restructurings," he said. Asked after his address for additional detail on the restructuring, Schmidt declined to comment except to suggest it would not be a major realignment. Schmidt spoke in a question-and-answer format at the annual Gartner conference at the Disney Swan Hotel in Florida. He also discussed the Provo, Utah-based company's efforts to provide uniform technology for its Novell Directory Services on multiple platforms, including Sun Solaris, Novell NetWare, and Windows NT. Schmidt's statements on the cross-platform nature of its directory services, as opposed to Microsoft's Active Directory, hit a cord with several audience members, including John McFadden, an IT manager for Loyola College, Baltimore, Md., who told Schmidt afterward he needed more information on Novell's game plan. "We are next month going to be shipping integrated NDS offerings for Solaris, NT and NetWare," Schmidt said. He said the product will not be limited by platform as it is developed and marketed. "Our directory will be multiplatform, and we believe that preserves customer choices," he said. "NDS will run equivalently on NT, NetWare and Unix. We're seeing a tremendous amount of interest in NDS on Solaris because of the e-commerce activities." Schmidt is the former chief technology officer for Sun Microsystems, Palo Alto, Calif., the maker of the Sun Solaris operating system. techweb.com Related Stories:
