DELLs deal with Samsung for LCD panels could be a hedge against this, turning an industry shortage into a DELL competitive advantage. If the "free PC" and very low cost PC business is limited by the shortage of small (but clunky) CRT monitors, and DELL has an offering that is only slightly more expensive but readily available, and with a lightweight notebook-style LCD monitor instead of the clunker, they could get a great design point and good ergonomics, and if the competition is starved for parts, keep a premium to maintain margins as well.

CPQ has been developing an LCD monitor business for some of the same reasons, but so far has kept to the high end of the space (17 inch and 18 inch equivalent monitors) which is also where the profit is in today's market.

This also fits into the consumer scenario that I put forth in my last post - lock in supply for a product line which is cost competitive but not "me too" - say some really unique form factors using "webster" style base components and an LCD monitor. Hey, I'd buy one...
