**OT** "A River Runs Through It"

This is one of the few works where both the book (novella) and move are equally outstanding. The movie is simply wonderful.. Robert Redford's narration is understated and perfect and the cinematography is stunning with a genuine reverence for the subject. Interestingly, the cinematographer (who won the Academy Award that year) was French and he brings a fresh look to the landscape he is filming. An aspect of the film I have always found intriguing and puzzling: when I first saw the film seven years ago, the two young actors who play the brothers bound by their love of fly-fishing were not household names. The younger brother was played by Brad Pitt before he became a megastar, yet I was taken by the superb performance of the actor who played his older brother. His characterization was subtle, with a combination of shyness, warmth and humility that brought the character (in reality, the author Norman Maclean) to life. Both he and Brad Pitt were equally handsome and charismatic, yet I thought he was the far superior actor. After the film, I predicted he would become a major star. I was wrong. He took on a series of roles in woeful Grade "B" and "C" movies and his career tanked. Brad Pitt's career, of course, is history. It illustrates how difficult it is to launch a major career in Hollywood and how much luck is involved. Trivia question: who DID play the role of the older brother (Norman Maclean) in the movie? See next post for answer.
