Penguin Computing Announces Powerful AMD Athlon
Processor-Based E-Business Web Server Solution

Powered By the World's Fastest x86 Processor, The Linux-Based Server Cluster is the Ideal E-Business Product for Enterprise Companies

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1999-- Penguin Computing and AMD (NYSE:AMD - news) introduced on Monday a powerful e-business Web server clustering solution, running on 500, 550, 600, 650 or 700 MHz AMD Athlon(tm) processors, that brings new levels of reliability and scalability to the enterprise server market.

The solution was announced at the Gartner Group symposium/ITxpo `99 in Orlando, Fla., where Penguin computing and AMD are showcasing it to a gathering of Fortune 2000 IT managers.

``We are very pleased to be offering AMD Athlon processor-based e-business server clustering solutions on our reliable Linux platforms,' says Andy Kaufman, Director of Communications at Penguin Computing.

The computing power provided by the AMD Athlon processor, coupled with the load balancing offered by Resonate's software, positions us to offer best-of-class value to our e-business customers.

Penguin Computing's e-business solution allows customers to focus on content development and customer relationships without worrying about server breakdowns. The servers, integrated with Resonate Central Dispatch, seamlessly interconnect with each other to provide an advanced traffic management solution.

Web requests from clients are intelligently routed to servers best suited for the task. If a server goes down, site traffic is immediately routed around the problem server to ensure constant up-time, making the Penguin Web-serving solution one of the most reliable on the market today. With the AMD Athlon processor, this solution can handle even the most demanding and mission-critical computational tasks.

``We are excited about the opportunity to enhance our relationship with Penguin Computing and the Linux community,' said Thomas Knapp, AMD Field Marketing Manager for Enterprise Computing.

"This Web server cluster, powered by the world's fastest x86 microprocessor, raises the standard of reliability in enterprise server solutions. It demonstrates the AMD Athlon's unprecendented performance capability in high-end workstations and servers."

Penguin e-business servers are designed to meet performance, space and cost objectives. Building on the Central dispatch's ability to direct traffic based on client requests, Penguin provides the building blocks to configure an infrastructure that complements an e-business's content and usage profile. Each e-business server is configured with Red Hat© Linux running the Resonate Central Dispatch advanced traffic management solution.

Penguin recommends that its customers to start their e-businesses with two application servers. As site traffic increases, Penguin's e-business solution, with its distributed architecture, allows scalability to more than 100 servers.

Penguin Computing also offers a wide selection of servers based on the AMD K6©-2 line of processors, as well as a single-server solution based on the AMD Athlon processor. The AMD processor-based models can be used as Web servers, file servers, email servers and database servers and are also available as rackmounts.

The Gartner Group Symposium/ITxpo is one of the largest gatherings of IT professionals in the country. It runs from Oct. 11 to Oct. 15 in Orlando, Fla. IT vendors from all over the world exhibit and demonstrate the latest in IT software, hardware and business solutions for the future. Penguin Computing and AMD are sharing a booth to demonstrate the new Web server cluster. In addition, AMD is also showcasing side-by-side performance demos between an AMD Athlon 600MHz processor-based computer and an equivalent clock-speed Intel Pentium III processor-based computer.
