Hi Tom...no not impatient at all and very confident in my initial price target of $35 year end. I never suggested I thought it would fly till we got closer to the end of the year. IMO street wants to see they will meet the significant upside they have speculated over the next 2 quarters. Also expect news on Framatome (sp) before end of year. May get a boost with the likes of LU if earnings are good.

What do you think.

Samsung and Alcatel HomeTop(TM) Solutions Join Forces to Attack Internet Markets

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:19

Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- In a move designed to open up new markets
for carriers and ISPs, Samsung Electronics and Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) have signed
a partnership agreement bringing together two new Internet products. The
agreement provides for co-operation of Alcatel and Samsung to make the Alcatel
HomeTop(TM) software suite for creating Internet portals fully interoperable
with the Samsung Anyweb(TM) Web Terminal.
Samsung's Anyweb combines the Internet features of a PC, such as
e-commerce, web surfing and e-mail, with Internet and the simplicity of a
regular telephone. An 8.2 inch/15cm screen gives access to the Internet while
a normal telephone handset and retractable keyboard provide an easy-to-use
interface. Anyweb is fully approved for ISDN connection.
Alcatel's HomeTop(TM) Solutions is an open, standards-based software suite
allowing operators and ISPs to create, build and manage multidevice Internet
portals. HomeTop works hand in hand with Anyweb to integrate the functions of
the Internet and telephone services.
The combination of equipment and software allows carriers and ISPs to
differentiate their services by offering unified messaging, personalized
welcome messages, targeted advertising and quick start facilities for ease of
customer use. Two key features of Anyweb and HomeTop have been the
development of a "plug and surf" start-up function and an HTML-based
offline-page (first page on the screen after power on). The plug and surf
function means that customers do not have to be web or Internet literate,
while the HTML-based offline-page enables easy customization for different
users, groups or even companies.
Samsung's Vice President and General Manager, Mr. HoMoon Kang said: "This
agreement pools the resources of two very strong companies and places the
products in a leading position in this dynamic market. We have already worked
together on the Telenor (Norway) project, also announced this week, and we see
this as a very credible start to our partnership."
Mr. Alan Mottram, President of Alcatel network applications activities,
said: "Until recently people needed a fully loaded PC and lots of technical
savvy to go online. But thanks to the user-friendly intelligence provided by
HomeTop(TM) Solutions, consumers with any terminals can be on the Internet in
instants. We are glad to extend HomeTop compatible terminals with the Samsung
Anyweb(TM)."
Anyweb(TM) is suitable for both residential and business use as well. It
comes with a built-in modem and, for the corporate environment, uses Ethernet
protocol to support 10BaseT allowing it to operate on company local area
networks (LANs). High performance can also be enjoyed in the home via ISDN or
the latest multimedia networks such as ADSL or cable telephony networks.
By supporting Anyweb, HomeTop(TM) Solutions furthers its goal to make the
Internet accessible to everyone, from anywhere, on every online device:
screenphones like Samsung's, but also mobile telephones, television set-top
boxes, PDAs and PCs.

Marrying IN and IP: Alcatel Offering 'Optimized Internet Access' Service

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:19

Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its IN@Internet(TM) and 2IP(TM)
programs Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) has introduced a new network service, called
"Optimized Internet Access."
The service allows Internet users to transparently dial-in to the Internet
Service Provider's most appropriate Point of Presence (PoP). The information
needed to select the PoP is based on information obtained "on-the-fly" from
the Alcatel 1135 Service Management Center that controls in real time the
resource usage for dial-IP and voice-IP for port wholesalers and service
providers.
"Optimized Internet Access" is the first in a series of new services
integrating the features of the Alcatel 1400 Intelligent Network (IN) and the
Alcatel 1135 Service Management Center (SMC).
"Through integrating the advanced routing functionality of the Intelligent
Network with the ISPs network, users calling into the ISP can have their call
routed in an efficient manner to the most appropriate available port," says
David Schwartz, Senior Analyst at Dataquest. "This allows ISPs to eliminate
customer busy signals and provide their customers with a single number to dial
for guaranteed access."
The service addresses the need for Internet Service Providers to offer
sufficient dial-in capacity and to give hard connection availability
guarantees to those customers that require strict Service Level Agreement
conformancy. This service also shows the capability of Alcatel's IN solution
to offer voice-data convergence services. It will allow Internet surfers to
dial one single number for Internet access, while having the guarantee to get
connected to the least loaded PoP.
"Optimized Internet Access is an important milestone in our IN@Internet
program," says Alan Mottram, President of Alcatel's network applications
activities. "It puts Alcatel in a key position as a provider of advanced
network applications that span both the traditional voice networks and the new
world of IP networks. Alcatel's IN@Internet will allow operators to enhance
the flexibility of their IP networks with the same service rich capability
that is enjoyed by today's more traditional networks."

About Alcatel's 1135 SMC and 1400 IN Solutions
The Alcatel 1135 Service Management Center is a highly scalable, carrier
class VPN resource management system offering value added services in the
dial-IP and voice-IP wholesale environment as well as in traditional ISP
business. The SMC is deployed worldwide in carriers and ISP networks and
currently connects over 5 million subscribers to the Internet.
The Alcatel 1400 Intelligent Network solution is a response to the demands
of users and Network Operators for service-driven solutions, with emphasis on
the need to dramatically shorten the time to market for new services. It
offers a complete toolbox for the creation, control and management of value
added services on fixed, mobile and data networks. Alcatel's IN is currently
deployed by 75 operators in more than 30 countries worldwide, offering a
variety of over 200 services.

About Alcatel
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end
voice and data solutions to established and new carriers, as well as
enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales of EURO
21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more than 130 countries.
IN@Internet(TM) is Alcatel's program to marry the Intelligent Network with
the Internet, and to gradually increase the role the IN is playing with
regards to the access to and offering of services on data networks. It fits
in the 2iPTM strategy, which is Alcatel's answer to the market demand for
carrier grade IP networking solutions.

Alcatel Introduces New Integrated Platform for Delivering Scalable, Feature Rich Voice, Fax, and Data Services Over the New Public Data Network

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:19

Product Leverages Assured Access Universal Access Gateway
and Alcatel SS7 and IN Expertise

Alcatel at Telecom 99 - Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) today announced an
integrated platform for delivering scalable, feature-rich voice, fax and data
services over the new public network. The integrated product enables service
providers to easily provision voice over IP (VoIP) services -- with many of
the advanced calling features found only in today's circuit switched voice
network -- using the same physical interface as data and fax services.
Combining Alcatel's technology leadership in telecommunications with
recently acquired Assured Access' expertise in IP-based multi-service access,
the integrated voice, fax and data product is composed of five key components:
the Assured Access Universal Access Gateway, Alcatel's 1135 Service Management
Center/Gatekeeper, the Alcatel Call Signaling Gateway, and Alcatel's IN 1400
Service Control Point and Service Creation Environment.
"By combining the best of the voice and data switching worlds, these
technologies deliver on the promise of convergence," said Peter Michiels, Vice
President of Alcatel's carrier data activities. "With the new product, service
providers can now easily manage thousands of voice, fax and data paths and add
new users and services on the fly -- a necessary feature in this quickly
evolving market."
The core of the product is Assured Access' NEBS level 3-compliant
Universal Access Gateway, a highly scalable product that supports voice, fax,
and dial-up data (V.90, ISDN) on the same physical interface, enabling service
providers to provision all three services in a cost-effective manner. Built
to scale as service providers add new subscribers, the Universal Access
Gateway is a high-density dial-up remote access server family that supports
more than 2,000 VoIP/FoIP or V.90 data ports per shelf and more than
8,000 VoIP/FoIP ports per standard seven-foot telco rack.
The platform leverages Alcatel's revolutionary 1135 Service Management
Center, an integrated management center and H.323 compliant gatekeeper that
manages multiple Universal Access Gateways as a single entity. Already
deployed extensively with carriers in Europe and Asia, the software enables
service providers to create and manage a service profile for each individual
user, a necessary feature for provisioning profitable service level agreements
(SLAs). The Service Management Center also incorporates a RADIUS server that
provides the accounting, authentication and authorization functions required
with the operation of data networks today.
"With over 8,000 VoIP ports per rack and a unified management interface in
the Service Management Center, the Alcatel solution gives service providers
both the scalability and the simplicity they need to keep up with customer
demand while holding down their operating costs," said Robert Bellman,
president of Brook Trail Research. "By supporting voice, data, and fax on the
same platform, the Universal Access Gateway not only minimizes equipment
costs, but also keeps the provider's network as simple and easy to manage as
possible."
"The Alcatel approach to integrated voice, fax and data over IP is exactly
the type of solution we have been looking for to provide advanced voice and
data services to our customers," said Bret Mingo, president and CEO of
CoreCom, a fast growing CLEC serving the mid-Atlantic region. "By supporting
voice, data, and fax on the same interface modules and integrating Alcatel's
time-tested voice products, the solution will allow a service provider like
CoreCom to provision and manage voice services at a level of granularity that
maximizes responsiveness to customer demands while minimizing hardware
investments."

Universal Access Gateway
The Universal Access Gateway is a scalable, high-density dial-up remote
access server family that supports more than 2,000 VoIP/FoIP or V.90 data
ports per shelf and more than 8,000 VoIP/FoIP ports per standard seven-foot
telco rack.
With a new universal server module specifically designed for the Universal
Access Gateway application, the Alcatel platform can terminate voice and data
calls on the same PSTN port, supporting dial-up data, PSTN phone, PSTN fax,
PSTN terminal and H.323 terminal calls. Voice and fax features include the
full range of compression, conversion, echo cancellation and encoding schemes
including G.711, G.723.1 and G.729A for voice and T.37 and T.38 for fax. The
product offers redundancy features and 99.999% system availability.
The Universal Access Gateway features digital signal processor (DSP)
technology on each card, automatically recognizing and compressing voice and
data traffic using a full range of voice and fax protocols.
Designed to provide the flexibility needed at the edge of the service
provider's network the Universal Access Gateway boasts a wide variety of PSTN
access interfaces including channelized DS3, T1, E1 and PRI. The Universal
Access Gateway also offers industry standard WAN interfaces including 100 Mbps
Fast Ethernet, ATM on DS3 and OC-3c/STM-1 and frame relay.

Alcatel Service Management Center
The voice over IP product also features Alcatel's 1135 Service Management
center, a key component for advanced call control and VPN-based resource
management of dial-up and voice-over-IP networks. The Service Management
Center manages multiple gateways as a unified resource, providing extensive
VPN management support, complete accounting and billing capability and
multiple built-in H.323 compliant VoIP Gatekeepers to enable carrier-class
wholesale and retail business models.
Using the advanced functionality of the Service Management Center, the
Universal Access Gateway deals with each call as an individual account,
enabling the system to individually provision, upgrade, manage and route all
connections and user profiles on the fly. Resources across all the gateways
are pooled and made available in a unified fashion, allowing network operators
to allocate voice and data calls across the entire pool of gateways.
The Service Management Center also features an easy-to-use graphical user
interface, allowing service providers to register new subscribers, create new
services and configure billing parameters easily and quickly. To maximize the
flexibility of the system, the product also features a proxy service, allowing
the service provider to integrate its preexisting authentication, billing and
accounting platforms with the Universal Access Gateway.

Alcatel Call Signaling Gateway
The Alcatel VoIP solution also incorporates Alcatel's Call Signaling
Gateway, a sophisticated SS7 Signaling Gateway capable of processing from
10,000 to 50,000 TCAP messages per second. The Alcatel Call Signaling Gateway
supports the MGCP (Multimedia Gateway Control Protocol) standard and protects
against POP failure by performing load balancing and redirecting calls to
available ports in the Universal Access Gateway. The Alcatel Call Signaling
Gateway supports both ANSI and ETSI SS7 variants.
Leveraging Alcatel's proven expertise in SS7 and the PSTN switched
network, the Call Signaling Gateway interfaces the PSTN's SS7 signaling
network with the Universal Access Gateway, allowing the Universal Access
Gateway to provide seamless call set-up between Internet networks and
traditional PSTN switched networks.

Alcatel Adds In Fusio Interactive Entertainment Applications and Services to Software Suite for WAP-Enabled Mobile Phones

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:20

Partnership With Entertainment Software Expert In Fusio Will Enhance
Operators' Customer Portfolios, Delivering Mobile Interactive Entertainment
Services Via Alcatel's Advanced Hometop Services Software Suite

Alcatel At Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- An agreement between Alcatel (NYSE:ALA)
and innovative application developer In Fusio is set to break new ground in
mobile phone interactive entertainment. The partnership will enable operators
adopting Alcatel's HomeTop(TM) Solutions software suite to offer In Fusio
gaming and entertainment services to their customers via mobile telephones and
other Internet-enabled devices.
The emergence of new types of Internet terminals such as WAP-enabled
mobile phones, Internet screenphones, television set-top boxes, and handheld
PDAs require portals compatible with all of them. Alcatel's HomeTop(TM)
Solutions is an open, standards-based software suite allowing operators and
ISPs to create, build and manage just such a multidevice Internet portal.
Welcoming the agreement, Alan Mottram, President of Alcatel networking
applications activities, said: "This is an exciting partnership for Alcatel
and our service provider customers. In Fusio is one of the few companies in
the world to have operational knowledge of developing and delivering games
through mobile phones and over-the-air interactivity. Alcatel HomeTop(TM)
Solutions is a perfect match for its innovative applications, attracting
operators, the Internet industry and their mass market customers."
Advanced methods of connectivity and data transfer, such as GSM, SMS or
WAP, now enable subscribers to play truly interactive games, such as
In Fusio's "Quizz" and "In Spirit." They have sufficient capacity to support
competitions by transmitting high scores, downloading new levels, upgrading
operating systems and meeting other players around the world.
"Over-the-air interactivity gives a whole new dimension to entertainment
services, such as gaming. For the operator, it is more than simply another
source of revenue, it makes mobile phones a daily tool for their subscribers,
increasing customer loyalty and satisfaction," continued Alan Mottram.
The mobile phone as a communications tool is becoming a mass market
interactive personal new media system. As in all mature markets, competition
will not be based solely on price - content and services will be major
competitive elements. Alcatel believes opportunities exist for operators and
manufacturers who can offer access to innovative content. "By creating new
ways of using a mobile phone, innovative content attracts a new kind of
customer which, in turn, expands the potential market. Access to new,
interesting content increases call length and frequency," added Mottram.
Gilles Raymond, CEO of In Fusio, commented: "This agreement with Alcatel
provides a logical and stimulating outlet for our expertise in over-the-air
interactive software development. The mobile phone will become to video
games, for example, what the personal stereo was for the hi-fi record player,
answering the immediate need for short, time-killing applications or full
games."
Alcatel and In Fusio will offer a comprehensive package, maintaining a
strong link between product and service and incorporating all aspects of
mobile phone technology. Services will include target market analysis,
tailored game creation, software development, server software development,
over-the-air interactivity management, maintenance, "push" marketing
strategies, plus competition promotion and partnership possibilities.

About Alcatel
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end

About In Fusio
In Fusio is a high-tech start-up company specializing in developing
entertainment content and services for a mass market audience via mobile
phones, developing games using WAP, SIM cards or even directly on the phones
themselves. Its aim is to use all the assets of the mobile phone as an
interactive, personal new media tool to meet the demands of end users. For
more information visit In Fusio on the internet: in-fusio.com

Market opportunity:
Despite the success of 32- and 64-bit gaming consoles, video games remain
the domain of teenagers and children and are rarely targeted at adults. A
hitherto hidden market for video games lies in the worldwide installed base of
over 50 million Set-Top Boxes and 70 million hand-held consoles -- including
mobile phones. When combined with the fact that around 80% of home PC use is
for games and 90% of mobile phone sales are to the mass market, it is clear
that leisure and entertainment represent enormous opportunities for
telecommunications operators and other service providers.

Alcatel Wins Order for 20,000 ADSL Lines from Telekom Austria

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:20

Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) has won an order
worth EUR 9.4 million (ATS 130 million) for the delivery and installation of
equipment amounting to 20,000 ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) lines
for Telekom Austria. Installation of this first commercial deployment of ADSL
in Austria has begun and will continue until the end of the year.
The ADSL equipment gives users fast access to the Internet and multimedia
services via the twisted copper pair of an operator's existing conventional
telephone infrastructure. Transmission speed is increased by 200-fold
compared with today's analogue modems and the telephone line remains free for
traditional telephone and fax use.
Welcoming the contract, Reinhard Hutter, Managing Director of Alcatel
Austria, commented: "The order from Telekom Austria is another milestone in
Alcatel's ADSL success story; our Austrian customer can rely on a technology
that has already proven itself successful around the world."
Jouni Forsman, Analyst at Dataquest, explained: "As more people worldwide
access the Internet, there is an increasing demand for higher bandwidth that
is driving both xDSL and cable growth. Although cable is leading at the
moment, Dataquest believes that long-term, xDSL has even greater potential
than cable due to the large number of copper loops deployed worldwide. In
terms of individual xDSL technologies, ADSL will be responsible for most of
the growth."
Several international market research companies have identified Alcatel
clearly as the premier ADSL provider in the world. Alcatel strengthened this
position by shipping more than 350,000 high-speed ADSL lines in the first
six months of 1999 alone. Overall, Alcatel has shipped more than 450,000 ADSL
lines and over 180,000 ADSL end-user modems since the end of 1997.
Alcatel has delivered ADSL equipment to Telia in Sweden, BT in the UK,
Belgacom, Telefonica in Spain, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, Singapore
Telecom and PT Telecom of Indonesia. Further Alcatel ADSL networks have been
implemented in Canada, China, Korea and Thailand. In the US, Alcatel's ADSL
technology is deployed by Bell Atlantic, SBC, Pacific Bell, Ameritech and
BellSouth. Last April, for example, Bell Atlantic finalised a
US $800 million, five-year deal.

NOTES TO EDITORS
International market research: Alcatel is Number One in ADSL: According
to the project ESS update 39: Broadband Access systems in Public Networks
from market research firm Dittberner Associates, Alcatel dominates the
ADSL-DSLAM (equipment at the operator's site) market worldwide, with 49% of
the total number of ADSL lines installed. No other vendor commands more than
15% in this area.
From a Customer Premises Equipment perspective, Cahners In-Stat's August
1999 report (Q2 99 Analogue and Digital Modem Market Analysis) noted that
Alcatel led the market in ADSL modem's shipped with 33% market share
worldwide.
In a separate development, a new survey from the international market
research company Dataquest has also ranked Alcatel as the world leader in the
overall supply of ADSL equipment -- both terminals and switch ports. In its
Worldwide xDSL Market Share and Forecast 1999, Dataquest reports that Alcatel
was the ADSL market leader and remained the largest company in the overall
market for calendar 1998. Its research revealed that ADSL accounted for 57.5%
of total xDSL revenues in 1998.
In addition, Alcatel has announced the availability of its first VDSL
(Very high-speed DSL) product, integrated in Alcatel's DSLAM platform. This
new product is also based on robust DMT (Discrete Multi- Tone) technology and
supports aggregate rates of up to 60 Mbit/s. With its extremely high speeds,
VDSL is particularly well suited to deliver services with video and multimedia
content over twisted pairs for bandwidth-hungry customers. Services such as
digital television, high-speed Internet Access, Video on Demand and
high-quality videoconferencing are supported by the system and are being
demonstrated at Telecom 99.

DSL -- an Exploding Global Market: The DSL market, driven by the
unrelenting demand for bandwidth and new services, is poised for rapid growth,
according to the Dataquest report. In one scenario, says Dataquest, worldwide
xDSL CPE shipments will grow to reach 9.77 million units in 2003. In this
case, shipments of xDSL CPE will overtake those of cable modems by the year
2001. Meantime, xDSL CO port shipments will reach 7.23 million in 2003.

About ADSL: ADSL transforms an operator's existing copper twisted pair
investment into a multimedia broadband distribution system. Always on and
fast, ADSL provides easy and quick links to the Internet when users simply
click on a mouse. Working on an existing copper telephone line, ADSL's
transmission speed is up to 200 times faster than today's analogue modems.
ADSL's speeds range up to 8 Mbit/s. The Alcatel ADSL system can support
high-speed data, while delivering simultaneous basic telephony services. It
is offered over the multi-standard-compliant (T1.413, G.Lite, G.dmt) Alcatel
ASAM (ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer) and advanced range of Alcatel Speed
Touch(TM) ADSL CPE modems.
An active contributor to the various standards bodies creating ADSL
standards, Alcatel continues to work to ensure mass-market availability of
high-speed Internet access based on a single, standardized ADSL technology.
Operators and service providers have the choice of offering a wide range of
services to subscribers connected to a single type of ADSL DSLAM, ranging from
very high to medium bit-rates.

PR Newswire, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 03:24

HomeTop 2.0 Helps Operators Create and Manage Internet Portals
in Order to Bring the Internet to Their Clients on all Online Devices

Alcatel at Telecom 99 -- Hall 4, Stand No. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) today announced the
release of HomeTop 2.0, the latest version of its HomeTop(TM) Solutions
software suite.
Alcatel's HomeTop(TM) Solutions is the first open, standards-based
software suite allowing operators and ISPs to create, build and manage
multi-terminal Internet portals.
Director of HomeTop(TM) Solutions Denis Attal sums it up: "First
generation portals were designed to be accessed from a personal computer. The
emergence of new types of Internet terminals such as WAP-enabled mobile
phones, Internet screenphones, television set-top boxes, and handheld PDAs
require portals compatible with all of them. HomeTop is there to respond to
this need."
Home Top 2.0 features a range of value-added applications resulting in a
combination of unique benefits:
-- Multi-device Portal Creation: The HomeTop Back Office allows the easy
and quick creation of portals that meet the wants and needs of the market.
-- Device Independence: The architecture of HomeTop allows Internet
applications and services to be easily adapted to any Internet device in a
fast and convenient way.
-- Proximity Services: Via an intelligent combination of location servers
and dynamic profiling facilities, HomeTop adapts the rich information of the
Internet to the "always on-the-go" style of today's user.
-- Continuity of Services: Every time he goes online, whatever the device
used, the user has access to his own personal communication and information
environment -- specially adapted to the way each device is used.

Lauding the arrival of this new release, Alan Mottram, President of
Alcatel networking applications activities, said, "The competition is tough in
the telecoms market, and price is no longer the only differentiator. Today,
value-added services are the key to attracting a loyal clientele -- and
generating revenue. The surging need for Internet services must be met.
Customers want information and entertainment, on-line shopping and on-line
banking, and they want access to those services anytime, anywhere, on any
device."
"With HomeTop Solutions, our customers can offer their customers access to
a vast array of value-added services, over a wide range of terminals,"
continued Alan Mottram. "We are proud that such innovative products such as
the Alcatel WebTouch(TM) and the OneTouch Pocket GSM phone together with other
similar devices, will enable HomeTop to create the momentum around next the
generation of Internet."
Alcatel's HomeTop(TM) Solutions team is building partnerships with
general-interest content providers and other companies which will enable them
to bring even more value to customers and final users. Alcatel can also
