Q 3G Concept Phone Described.
JohnG

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND, 1999 OCT 11 (NB) -- By Sylvia Dennis, Newsbytes.
Qualcomm [NASDAQ:QCOM], well known as a prime mover on third generation
(3G) cellular, has taken the wraps off a concept 3G phone designed for
use on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks.

Showing the phone over the weekend at the Telecom '99 event in Geneva,
Qualcomm officials said that the concept handset is actually a
prototype that the firm is working on.

The phone incorporates 3G features such as videoconferencing and Web
browsing. These functions, Qualcomm says, are dependent on the 3G
network supporting HDR (High Data Rate) transmissions.

Qualcomm says that 3G phones will incorporate features such as a color
LCD display and a touch panel control, as well as a pop-out easel back
for desktop conference calls and video display and a retractable keypad
cover to protect the screen. The phone also includes voice command of
all major functions.

Qualcomm's prototype QCP 3G handset is extremely light and comes in a
magnesium case with leather trim. The phone has a very small palmprint
and is just 2.5 centimeters thick.

Qualcomm's Web site is at qualcomm.com .
