The mansions are worth the trip alone. Although they are ostentatious and often too eclectic, flaunting wealth rather than taste, they give an insight into the period between the Civil War and the First World War that is hard to get, a feel for the vacuum in our cultural life, and its rusticity, and the reasons for what Wolfe calls the "colonial complex", among other things. These people had to go to Europe to find models for their attempt to embody a patriciate....
