Echelon Previews Upcoming LNS Release at LonWorld99 Conference AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1999-- Echelon Corporation (Nasdaq:ELON - news), the leading worldwide provider of infrastructure components and tools for LonWorks© control networks, today previewed the next release of its LNS(tm) network operating system.
The unveiling at the LonWorld99(tm) Conference and Exhibition gave attendees an advanced look at the powerful new features and benefits that LNS for Windows© Release 3 will deliver.
LNS for Windows is the most broadly used infrastructure software used by tools that install, monitor, control, diagnose, and maintain LonWorks networks. Release 3 takes advantage of standard LonWorks Internet Protocol (IP) routers -- such as Echelon's recently announced i.LON(tm) 1000 IP Server -- to offer a substantial increase in performance and a significant reduction in total system cost.
Key to delivering these improvements is Echelon's breakthrough Virtual Network Interface (VNI) technology. For LNS for Windows applications that use a standard LonWorks Network Interface (NSI) to connect to a LonWorks network, VNI moves the upper layers of the protocol stack off of the Neuron© Chip and onto the attached PC.
Doing so not only increases performance by offloading portions of the protocol processing onto a high performance processor, it also enables these applications to overcome group and domain addressing constraints imposed by the Neuron Chip's limited resources. VNI also enables these same applications to connect to LonWorks networks over IP with a standard network interface card (NIC) in place of a LonWorks NSI.
In addition to VNI, LNS for Windows Release 3 includes enhancements to the LNS Data Server that deliver previously unattainable performance levels for monitoring and control applications as well as offer more powerful data formatting options. Release 3 also includes a new ATL/COM interface for faster, easier, and more robust access from C++.
``With LNS for Windows Release 2 we enabled IP-connected LNS client applications,' said Damian Inglin, Echelon's product marketing manager for LNS products. ``With Release 3 we've extended that support to allow the LNS Server itself to be remotely connected to LonWorks networks over IP and, with our new VNI technology, we have delivered an order of magnitude performance increase for LNS client and server applications alike. LNS for Windows is the platform that unlocks the performance and scalability potential of LonWorks networks.'
Echelon will begin production shipments of LNS for Windows Release 3 in the second quarter of next year. For more information about LNS for Windows, LNS development tools, LNS-enabled third-party installation and HMI tools as well as LNS plug-ins, contact your local Echelon sales representative or visit the LNS home page at www.echelon.com/lns.
