On the bright side, however, analysts believe Compaq seems to have been able to retain most of its market share in the U.S. - though at the expense of its profit margins.

Compaq: Good news - bad news. The good news is they're still using our PCs. The bad news is that we have to give them away for free.

Compaq: Hey, do you realize that Bill Gates *personally makes more money from a Compaq PC sale than does our entire sales division?
