> You might say that they have formulated an objective: the "total destruction of all terrorists." But then, what do they mean by "terrorists"? The entire population? Anyone in the Chechen armed forces? Any representative of the Maskhadov government? Or just Basayev, Khattab, and Co.?

I believe it is Basayev, Khattab and Co. primarily...But I think they are making it up as they go along just like Allbright/Berger/Clinton/Cohen/Clark were doing...

Hmm, maybe they 'll just try out some of those new nuke missiles, who knows...We are in dangerous "make strategy as we go along" mode.

JBE, it is just the unclarity of purposes, coupled with 'heroic' drive speeches, and including the unspoken premise that Russian war purposes could and should be found ad hoc, that makes me - humble pedestrian news reader - suspect that the Russian leaders are NOT out for a short victorious war.

A long one, with alleged partial successes here and there, is much more useful for stabilizing your (domestic !) power. By instinct I strongly believe in a supremate of internal politics in this case, ... rather than a war fought for any military or strategic objectives.

my half cent, MNI.
