Charitable activities of the churches of various denominations and types alleviate much human suffering. A good many of these activities have an accompanying function, propagation of the faith, which to my mind slightly colors the admiration one otherwise feels. E, my dear, a good many do not. There have been times when the Red Cross could not get into countries with help, but the Catholic Church was able to smuggle food and supplies for the starving. This effort was not prompted by propagation of religion; it was purely humanitarian.
