closed. The No. 1 semiconductor maker reported profit that fell
below analysts' forecasts. Intel is the third-most heavily
weighted stock in the S&P 500.

A report Thursday on U.S. retail
sales and a report on producer prices Friday could indicate
faster inflation, which may cause the Fed to raise rates at its meeting next month, analysts said.
``This is telling us that the future isn't as rosy as we
thought it was,' Niedenberger said. ``Fears about inflation and a weaker dollar bring down the stock market.'
