The most interesting aspect I noted in the conf call was the question from one analyst if the hickups with the .18 micron technology and delays in the Merced rollout would not have occured, would INTC have met the 2nd quarter guidance (especially on the GM percentage).

Bryant answered bluntly in one word: "Yes."

So one can talk alot about all possible things and "explanations", it seems to me that at the heart of the "miss" is a technical/operational issue that is in the process of being resolved. The stock may get hammered tomorrow, but that's creating just another buying opportunity for this world-class company. Longterm investors should be happy, IMO.

I actually found Bryant sounded very annoyed, uninspired and tired. I don't know, though, whether this is his usual way of speaking and presenting... sure wouldn't win a rhethorics award that way...

greetings,
Thomas

"Andy B. started off sounding a little defensive"

He's on CNBS right now, did he ever have a stroke?

Tony, the stock if down will only go back up.....it never sleeps!....Intel's third quarter was a busy one.

The company bought four companies in the period.
These include: Dialogic Corp., Level One
Communications, Softcom Microsystems, and
NetBoost Corp.

The company named its fast 64-bit microprocessor
chip for powerful business machines "Itanium." The
chip, designed to run workstations, was previously
known as the Merced.

The Camino, or 820, chip set also received a fair
amount of attention during the quarter. Launching
delays have affected Rambus' (RMBS: news,
msgs) DRAM chips, causing production setbacks.
Intel's Camino chip set works with Rambus'
technology.

In early September, Intel said it's "firmly
committed" to Rambus direct dynamic
random-access memory as the memory of the
future. See related story.

Net push

In late September, Intel said it would spend more than $1 billion to
develop its Internet hosting plan, called Intel Online Services, and foresees
data centers around the world. See full story. At the time of the
announcement, Intel said it will have 12 data centers operational by the
end of next year.

Additionally, last week, Intel it would buy privately held IPivot Inc. in a
$500 million cash deal that extends the chip king's incursion into the
Internet-fueled networking-equipment industry. IPivot makes specialized
equipment for e-commerce companies.

Tony,

I didn't have the same take-away from the call... Andy was defensive because they missed.

.18 is late and ramp costs are higher than expected.

2 percentage points higher next quarter - umm... yeah, right.

Seasonally strong Q4...not in 1999 it won't be.

Acquisitions are a drag on earnings as Dialogic and LevelOne margins are lower than IA's.

I didn't walk away positive and I don't think the analysts questions were addressed straight on.. I sensed defensiveness...and relief in some questions as well..the ones that weren't controversial.

RE: "Andy didn't answer, only implying 4Q should be significantly higher."

Hi Tony,

To avoid unrealistic expectations, why doesn't Andy just say, "4Q should be possibly higher," instead of saying/implying "significantly" higher?

Best,
Amy J
