>>Gates grades Microsoft's Net plans
MONTE CARLO (CBS.MW) -- When asked by a moderator at the European Technology Roundtable Exhibition in Monte Carlo Tuesday to give Microsoft a grade on the implementation of its Internet strategy, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates said he'd give his company a "B+" for the implementation of its Internet strategy since the company adopted it in 1995. "When we step back we'd say simplifying the user interface . . . that's something we could have done sooner. Making it easy to deploy software and the whole cost of (PC) ownership . . . I'd say those are the two things [that he'd mark the company down for]."
...
Gates said he's changed his company's "vision" just this year from the one it's held since 1975, the mantra of a computer on every desk and in every house. Now Microsoft, Gates said, aims to "empower people through great software anytime, any place and on any device.
Among other things, Gates predicts that electronic books will take off. "People will be surprised at how quickly that comes along," he said. Gates also played down the idea that Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs) has any particular advantage in the Internet area. "Every company in this business has to renew its excellence every two to three years."
When asked if Microsoft if plans to accumulate Internet-based business, in the same vein as CMGI (CMGI: news, msgs), Gates responded, "We're going to stick to making software, that's what we do best."<<
