I appreciated your post. Spent a little time over there myself. Beautiful country, but rugged. JLA

Your pronouncements about the veracity of statements made by the actual participants in events were, among other things (in my opinion), condescending and dismissive.

If you read several books specifically dealing with US policy in the Philippines, with thousands of citations from hundreds of individuals involved in the policy making process, and found that it disagreed with comments cited in a panegyric biography which devoted a full page to the subject, which would you believe?

That's even before considering the fact that the first source dovetails quite neatly with personal observation, and the second does not.

I do tend to be condescending and dismissive when faced with statements that are clearly self-serving and far from accordance with everything else I have read and observed. I acknowledge it as a fault. I am perhaps over-inclined (too much experience) to assume that those on these threads who fire off opinions about the Philippines know nothing about the subject; I acknowledge that as a fault as well, though if you'd read some of the messages I have you might think it understandable.

I suspect that I am less the ideologue than you think, possibly because this happens to be a subject that I take seriously, for personal reasons. Perhaps we should seek neutral ground, and discuss Timor, or China....

CR, Steven is quite forceful in his statements, admittedly. On the other hand, I have found that he is quite willing to listen--contrary to your perception of him--and you should believe him when he says so.
