What you describe seems somewhat like the Clayton Christensen ideas of disruptive innovations where technological undershoot will gain maket acceptance. The Thin client maybe not be able to do 1/8 of the functions of a full OS but if all we do is sign on the web and use server based applications, who cares?

Christensen's book "Innovator's Dilemma" looks at numerous examples of why companies fail and typically they feel their superior product and established customer base will save the day. Just like the IBM management team asleep at the switch when MIcrosoft got the PC going under their mainfrmae nose. Gates knows all of this and could happen to him?
