Reducing memory load ...

Just a hint: Press Ctrl-Alt-Del keys and check the window for any extra programs running. Sometimes things get installed and get started without leaving any hints of their presence. Sniff them out.

Another hint: Run step-by-step startup and be sure that all that starts is needed. Turn off any logging, if possible.

Can, or do you want, scheduled tasks disabled.

Last hint: Install Tweak-UI from your Win98 CD and use Paranoia tab to automatically delete caches and histories at startup.
