>>doesn't result from the sin of Adam.<<

The easiest definition of sin is 'to miss the mark'.

Man was created in the image of God with a soul that would live forever. This soul would be housed in a body of flesh and blood that could never live up to the holiness of God. This was the greatest problem that our creator had to overcome. Because, not only is God a God of love, forgiveness, mercy, and longsuffering, but He is also a God of justice.
By His very nature, God can never do anything that is unjust. Justice demands that sin is punished. That punishment is separation from God. But God does not want us to be separated from Him. He loves us with a love that we will never truly understand. He has made us His crowning glory of His creation and has given us dominion over all he has made, knowing that we would miss the mark.

How could God remain the Holy and righteous judge of the universe and save sinners like you and me? That is the story of the Bible. How God purposed and planned our salvation before He ever laid the foundations of the earth.

I would love to share that plan with you if interested.

Bob, Perhaps I missed something but,I have not seen an explanation of the "original" sin in the Bible. I have always been led to believe that it was the eating of the forbidden fruit and being evicted out of Eden. If I am in error, please correct me. As some already know, I have not been a Christian for a great deal of time and, in some cases, am still learning.

I like your explanation of the handle. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Abe Lincoln: " It is better to remain silent, and thought a fool, than to speak, and remove all doubt."
