The linked press release states that Shaw Communications has increased their stake in Canadian Satellite Communications Inc.(Cancom), the operating partner for Globalstar Canada. Shaw previously controlled 24% of Cancom and should now have overall control. The other major share holder of Cancom is Rogers of Cantel/AT&T Canada fame. The transferred shares were part of a protracted takeover battle for WIC. It seemed to have been going on for years (and that's not Mqurice's internut time).

The settlement of this matter should be a positive note for Cancom who's business is similar to that of Loral's FSS Division. Cancom also operates OmniTracs in Canada and recently acquired Shaw's interest in the DTH Death Stars of StarChoice. The transaction is supposed to be completed November 1st.

G* Canada will be launching at the end of November using Qualcomm phones. In my neck of the woods, The Near North, those phones will only work in AMPS and SAT mode. I am told that I will not be able to get a sat phone linked to my CDMA operator. This may bode well for Rogers (AT&T Canada) considering an earlier rather than later move to 3G CDMA. Another speculation could be that Shaw's control of Cancom might loosen the reigns enuff for G* Canada to link their services up with Rogers' competitor Bell Mobility (I dream!).

I've been perusing the sites of the other Canadian G* service providers and have yet to see any mention of pending services.
