I don't think the book is going anywhere, MNI. The part of the book industry that is threatened is the textbook industry. I forget the exact numbers, but I read a statistic once that said that roughly 75% (I think its actually more, but being uncertain of the number this is a lowball) of the books published in America are textbooks for schools and technical manuals for industry. If these publishers take a hit, I wouldn't be too sympathetic. They've been gouging college kids and local governments for years.

Its understandable that hype artists would push this new "e-book" for the mainstream, but really, do you think it will replace what we have now? The present form of the book is the most convenient imaginable, I don't think it can improved. The only threat may be a lack of pulp in the future, in which case they could use the ubiquitous cannabis plant for pulp, they say its an excellent and earth-friendly source.
