Serge, why Yankee Group,Vertical System and Dataquest research, which point out at NN as a Global(Europe,US)leader is worthless for you, but other research done by unknown research firm about US market only has to be taken seriously.

By the way, would you care to comment on the Ottawa Citizen article which makes the point that Newbridge is losing ground to competition and is not diversified enough to be successful. Please do not tell me that the same article said similar things about Nortel because I will view that as a copout. The fact is Nortel is making a killing on optical and Newbridge is not on its so-called hot technology -- ATM.

Industry research is based on statistics given by vendors and there are many ways to read them. If a router has ATM interfaces does it count as an ATM sale? Some giants think so. In the last couple quarters NN's increasing ATM revenues indicate it's gaining market share not losing it. As for Nortel's strength in fiber optics, this is based in part on Cambrian's OpTera products, which as you know are completely interoperable with NN's switches. As an NN affiliate, Cambrian worked closely with NN's engineers to assure compatibility. Does this guarantee NN will get contracts wherever NT sells into a space where IP/ATM switches are needed? Of course not. But it does indicate they'll be considered.

As for diversification, I believe that's an old argument that's fast becoming redundant. NN's positions in LMDS and 3dSL are expanding their markets ten-fold.

Yes, I'm an optimist and only time will tell if it's justified. As for name-calling, I've never stooped to attacking you personally and I'd like the same consideration.

Regards,

Pat
