In this case, I don't blame the analysts. They are trying to predict some very tricky numbers and it's absurd that the market demands that they hit it to the penny.

Just look at the last 10 quarters of gross margins:

Jun 97 60.7%
Sep 97 57.5%
Dec 97 58.6%

Mar 98 54.2%
Jun 98 48.9%
Sep 98 52.6%
Dec 98 58.3%

Mar 99 59.0%
Jun 99 58.9%
Sep 99 58.7%

Seven tenths of one percent miss translates into one cent per share. Not an easy shot, if you ask me. If you are an Intel investor, get used to this Russian roulette every quarter. Better yet learn to profit from it.
