Could it be that the market was bought off the lows anticipating (hoping for) a rally in bonds? If so, hope is fading fast.

that's very unlikely...in fact, the Rydex bond ratio shows that the majority of funds is positioned the wrong way in the bond. there is however some unwinding of leveraged bets in the Yen/gold/Swissy carry trades going on. the credit bubble fostered by the Fed has made the financial system inherently unstable and bond investors are now paying the bill. simple as that.
