Ashanti leads shimmering gold push

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Gold stocks pushed higher Wednesday, as investors bid up shares of Ashanti Goldfields in the wake of a takeover offer by Britain's Lonmin.


The PHLX Gold & Silver Index ($XAU: news, msgs) advanced 5.2 percent as Ashanti Goldfields (ASL: news, msgs) shares soared 11/16 to 4 13/16.

Lonmin has offered to buy the 68 percent of the remaining shares of Ashanti that it doesn't already own.

Based on Lonmin's closing price of 570 pence on Friday, the offer represents a value of $7 per Ashanti share.

Other components in the index also shined: Battle Mountain Gold (BMG: news, msgs) increased 5/16 to 3 1/2; Freeport McMoran Copper & Gold (FCX: news, msgs) added 1 1/8 to 17 15/16 and Newmont Mining (NEM: news, msgs) rose 1 5/16 to 26 15/16.

Tunica, you got me there..I must plead guilty...However it is in no way I wanted to hurl insults at Ole49...It's just that her Entire Persona (from my vintage point) so utterly entertaining that it is difficult to hold back...
