I think the Fed will resort to selling gold to take the dollar out of circulation to keep the strong-dollar policy and American prosperity going as long as possible. The Fed will do this in addition to bulldozing net-exporting countries like Japan to print more of their currency or buy the dollar, threatening them that a fall in the US will ruin their economies. Thus, your hypothesis or belief, that might have worked in a free market, is not necessarily going to pan out in the presence of smart intervention. There will be a catastrophe only when interventions cannot prop the dollar up. US has massive hordes of gold with little industrial value; why is keeping that reserve more important than keeping the dollar and the economy more stable?
