Venezuela newspaper El Universal

eud.com
reported May 29, 1999

That TESAM "culminated the
installation of its power station of satellites, located in the Velasquez, town near Chico
River (State Miranda) and that meant an investment of 30 million dollars, including the
capital cost. "

and that testing would start in August with service start in October.

Things seemed to have slipped a bit....

Same article quoted TESAM exec as saying it expected 100K subscribers in Venezuela within five years of start, and would charge $1.50/minute for mobile calls, $1.01 for fixed service.

Article concludes "GlobalStar and Iridium have been
criticized because, in the end, it does not know if their projects (that they imply highest
investments) are profitable.

Scallion, nevertheless, affirms that they are profitable because ' the cellular network is
concentrated more and more in the populated areas, leaving without cover important
activities like the extraction of raw materials or the defense fronterizá, that opportune
communications in zones separated from the country need."
