Project History
The Athabasca oil sands deposit is located at various depths, from surface outcroppings to several hundred metres below ground. The first work done on the Syncrude leases was in 1958 when Cities Service Athabasca Inc. started up a pilot plant and research facility. In 1964 Syncrude Canada was incorporated by Cities Service Athabasca Inc. (a predecessor to Canadian Occidental), Richfield Oil Corporation, Imperial Oil Limited, and Royalite Oil Company Limited (a predecessor to Gulf Canada Resources Limited).

The Syncrude Project commenced production in 1978 with an initial licensed production limit of 129,400 Bbls/d. The rate of production has increased substantially since commencement and over the last five years the rate has increased by approximately 30%. Significant capital investments and numerous smaller improvements have enabled the Syncrude Plant to set production records in 16 out of 18 years of operation. Production achieved another record in 1995, producing 73.9 million barrels for an average of over 200,000 Bbls/d. On August 7, 1995, the Syncrude Project produced its 800 millionth barrel of Syncrude Sweet Blend.

In 1994 the AEUB extended the license for the Syncrude Plant to 2025 and increased the authorized annual production limit of the Syncrude Plant to approximately 78 million barrels per year (an average of 215,000 Bbls/d).

Mining
The Syncrude Project is among the largest material handling operations in the world. The first stage of the mining operation is to remove the overburden using trucks and shovels. Afterwards, the exposed oil sand is mined through two processes:

dragline, bucketwheel and conveyor system, where draglines lifts the oil sands and places it in rows for the bucketwheel reclaimer to pick up and place on the conveyor system, or

a newer, more cost efficient truck, shovel and hydrotransport system. The hydrotransport system replaces the conveyor system. The ore is mined with trucks and shovels, crushed and then mixed with hot water and caustic soda in a cyclofeeder, screened to remove rocks and then pumped directly to the extraction plant in a slurry pipeline. The extraction process begins in the pipeline.

Extraction

The extraction process separates the bitumen from the water, sand, and other materials sent in the oil sands. To do this, the oil sand is fed into large rotating drums called tumblers and mixed with hot water, steam and caustic soda. The slurry from the tumblers is screened to remove large lumps, mixed with the slurry from the hydrotransport system and fed into separator vessels where bitumen floats to the surface as a froth. The frothy bitumen is diluted with naphtha and then fed into centrifuges which further separate liquids and solids. Finally, the naphtha is removed and returned to the extraction plant for reuse, leaving only clean bitumen, the feedstock for the upgrader.

The Syncrude Project
The Syncrude Project is a joint venture formed to surface mine oil sands, extract and upgrade the bitumen to a light sweet synthetic crude oil known as Syncrude Sweet Blend. The plant site is located 40 kilometers north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the appointed operator of the Syncrude Project. Syncrude Canada Ltd. is owned by the Syncrude Project participants in the same proportions as their interest in the joint venture.

The Syncrude Project produced 73.9 Mmbbls of Syncrude Sweet Blend in 1995, amounting to approximately 12% of Canada's annual petroleum requirements. The Syncrude Project is Canada's largest single source of crude oil and the second largest producer of crude oil in Canada.

( And others have said that there is enough there ( here ) to equal the Saudi - Mid-Eastern Oil Fields!) ( At just 30% recovery percentage!!! ! )
Chucka- it seems to be so much like MINERAL MINING doesn't it. The Tails....of the duck.
