re: "I just don't think they will risk missing earnings 3 quarters in a row even at the risk of giving AMD some pricing slack."

Giving AMD pricing slack gives them viability, something that intEL has attempted at every turn to avoid. Do not count on it.

kash - <If they are unable to hit the high clock speed grades in the 700-750Mhz arena then its very difficult to see how they average $300 ASPs as well for coppermines.>

What if Intel has absolutely no problem hitting those speeds? Then how do you see it? How 'bout a best case scenario in this regard.

Kash, <I just don't think they will risk missing earnings 3 quarters in a row>

There may be no other choice :)

Look at Intel's creative accounting this quarter,
(see the very last table in
intel.com; ):

Intel Architecture Business Group:

2Q99 revenue 5,559; profit 2,305
3Q99 revenue 6,331; profit 2,789

Looks like a perfect CPU business, same fat margins
as before, right?

Now look at "all other" business, including
presumably booming flash :

2Q99 revenue 1187, profit +15
3Q99 revenue 997, profit (-733) !!!!

How it comes that suddenly it become TWO TIMES
more expensive to manufacture the same things
as 3 month before? Even for a person with
slightly more than one ounce of brain (like engle)
it must be clear that they write off every possible
dollar into "other business" books, in attempt
to sustain image that nothing has happen in
their core CPU business... nice try indeed.

Just my few engels and elmers...
