How long has the VIX indicator been used?

The oldest chart I can find (telechart) is dated back to 1996, with the three highest readings of 40.10 on 11/13/97, 53.08 on 9/1/98 and a whopping 60.63 on 10/12/98.

Heinz, the last time th VIX closed above 30 was on 9/23 when the DOW closed down 205.48 points and the NASDAQ closed down 107.89 points. I'm looking for the VIX to hit the 30 level as well.

Heinz,

Perhaps I am missing something, but I guess I see it the other way around. Extreme highs in VIX usually foretell a big rise in the market, and vice-versa for extreme lows. In fact every time it broke 30 it signaled the end of the sell of and a big run up came after. Also the extreme high in th VIX in mid-July came before the summer correction..
