Welcome New GUMM Investors

From yesterday's spike, it seems obvious that there are a few people new to GUMM. There are a lot of things to dd here on SI and the Yahoo board.

From a financial perspective, the best discussions have been by Dan Zimmerman on SI and "makemilns" on the Yahoo board.

I look at this company on a number of levels. Overall, it is a turnaround company. A new administration, so to speak, has been with this formerly not-well-managed (IMO) company for little over a year and has steadily increased revenues for the last several quarters based on a redirection of their core gum business. It has a good base of functional gum contracts that are not limited to the USA. Zicam and nicotine gum represent the possibility (actually probability) of rapid growth for this company since both the OTC cold remedy market and the smoking cessation market are huge. MO's announcement yesterday should help continue to set an anti-cigarette tone that has been heavily supported by the AMA for a number of years and taken up by the Clinton administration as an important social cause. The company has promised an international nicotine venture by the end of 1999. Those of you who have traveled internationally have probably looked incredulously at the incredible rate of smoking among foreigners. I was at a meeting in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago and the N.O convention Center is huge. They have the capacity for several meetings to go simultaneously. One day I was running late and I took the bus to the closest convention just adjacent to mine. As the bus pulled up, there were a good number of people smoking outside (I said to myself. "these are not American doctors - no way). Anyway, it turned out to be an international ENT (otorhinolaryngologistss = ear, nose, throat) meeting. Of course, smoking is the largest cause of head & neck squamous cell carcinoma. Many governments are just beginning to realize the tremendous health consequences of cigarette smoking. GumTech has spent a lot of money during the last year doubling their warehouse space and getting production capacity enabled to take on huge contracts. They are inching toward profitability ( would have been profitable last quarter except for a charge to get the exclusive rights to the only material so far that can reduce dental plaque up to 35% )yet operate at only about 15% capacity in production. But I digress.

From a trading standpoint, GUMM is a thinly traded low-float highly shorted company with 2 dynamite products with extremely large market potential. The potential is not just in the size of their markets, but , more importantly, the size of the markets realtive to the current size of this company.

People have compared GUMM to KIDE in that GUMM is about where KIDE was a year ago in terms of being yawned at by the market. KIDE is up 1300% for me in less than a year (thank you, Street Walker) based on its sound business plan and a product the depth and earning power of which many were previously skeptical but now are really just beginning to realize. People talk about short squeezes on SI all the time but few come to pass. If there was ever a situation ripe for one, GUMM is it. I am not in GUMM for a daytrade, obviously, because:

From an investment standpoint, so much growth is possible and so much more can come out of this company and its joint ventures. If Zicam succeeds, it is possible (IMO) that other products may arise from the LLP. Note that Drs. Hensley and Davidson have physiology backgrounds and their company portion of the GelTech LLP is BioDeliveries, Inc. The rapid development of drugs in nasal sprays and drugs in chewing gums combined with their expertise and that of GUMM CEO Gary Kehoe in formulating palatable formulations means the stroy of this company will not necessarily end with nicotine gum and Zicam.

From a marketing standpoint, the company has done a remarkable job placing Zicam in 40,000-50,000 stores for its big publicity launch and hired excellent PR and ad agencies with proven track records.

My personal opinion why Zicam is significant on a medical level: Message 7528323

I use Zicam myself and currently am on the tail end of a cold. I have had it for 2.5 days - got it from the baby. I have been taking Zicam for almost 48 hours and I am nearly 90% better. Colds usually really kick my butt for about 10 days, but tonight I was able to play tennis for an hour and then go lift weights for an hour after working a full 10.5-hour day. With the congestion and sore throat I usually get with colds, I usually stay away form the gym for at least 4-5 days.

Another way to look at it is that, in a down market, some of those with short positions in a stock that's not performing (going down) for them may switch those funds into more obvious short targets, like overinflated Internet stocks.

Like Howard, I'm already on the upswing after noticing early cold symptoms (throat congestion) Tuesday and starting Zicam that night. It was going to be a severe cold, and I was miserable all day yesterday, but the stuff has definitely kicked in and I can foresee being 90% by tonight. The key is definitely starting Zicam at the first sign of symptoms.
