QW..PM me with any question re: Northern Ca. Have lived hear the last 20 years. Know a bunch of cool places, some of which were mentioned by JJJ. You should really try to make it up to Sonoma. (about 1 hr north of the golden gate)
Heart of the Somoma Valley wine country. Arguably the best in the world! I live right across the road from Matanzas Creek winery and within a couple miles of Chateau St. Jean, Kenwood, Ravenswood etc. If you like wine, beautiful scenery and a great time come here! No I dont work for the Sonoma County chamber of commerce.

In southern ca, check out Laguna Beach...spent a couple weeks there this summer and it was fantastic.

if you like to hike there is a scenic little jaunt through Muir woods, just a little further off the paved path that the tourists walk :)
when i lived there i would also hike at Tennesee Valley, just by the Ocean, when i knew the path, i would hike at midnight
full moon was ok, new moon with a flashlight in my pack was a blast
nothing like it, dark fog, wind from the ocean :)
regards,
ynot ;)
