Actually, my understanding is he joined the Klan and a masonic lodge at the same time. In those days the two were interchangeable. As a young man he had a job as a travelling salesman, and you didn't get far in the South in business if you didn't know that masonic handshake. I think when he left that job he also terminated his membership in the Klan.
